Apple’s Been Busy

Unless you were under a rock, you probably knew that Apple sent out invitations to a ‘music related’ event dated today. Thoughts varied about the ‘announcements’ that were impending but in the end, the speculation was spot on.
I just realized that the ‘nano’ is really the replacement for the ‘mini’ so my frustation with Apple was slightly unfounded. With that being said, they should have not went back to the 2GB and 4GB size factors.
iPod Nano

The iPod nano comes in 2GB ($199) and 4GB ($249). It also comes in both the classic iPod white and a U2 iPod style black.
It’s obviously tiny but I’m pretty annoyed with Apple at this point. Talk about milking the same exact iPod technology for all it’s worth. More or less, the ‘nano’ is what the ‘Shuffle’ should have always been. Why make two models for basically the same thing? Unfortunately, Apple has a cult-like following like none other who purchase Apple products simply because they are made by Apple. Don’t get me wrong, I’m relatively close to being one of those users but with moves like this from Apple along with the non-bluetooth Might Mouse debacle, I’m quickly losing my lust.
ROKR E1

The ROKR E1 (available exclusively through Cingular) appears to be the iTunes phone we’ve all been waiting to see but knew wouldn’t be disappointment. The idea of a mobile phone that functions as an iPod should make anyone drool but unfortunately the 100 song capacity is far from enough for the average iPod user. Aside from that, it’s a pretty full featured phone with bluetooth, a VGA camera (no word yet on megapixels), and a 9 hour talk time.
iTunes 5

The final announcement from Apple today was the release of iTunes 5. New features include a nifty spotlight-like search feature, much needed playlist folders, parental controls, and more. Overall it’s a pretty solid update with features that were needed and some that go above and beyond. The main change, the interface, might be a rough one to swallow for long time iTunes users. Personally, when I first loaded it up I immediately didn’t like the new look. After only a few minutes I quickly began to realize that it’s an overall improvement with a more modern streamlined look.
Conclusion
I love Apple and I love their products. I’m even typing this on my new Powerbook that I dreamed about for almost two years before being able to buy one. It’s a simple fact that Apple makes amazing products and ever since the release of the iPod, Apple’s industry recognition has been through the roof. Unfortunately, it’s beginning to feel like Steve is blatantly taking advantage of consumers by releasing almost identical products with slight aesthetic alternations or functionality enhancements for the same price.
