MacWorld 2005

If you’re slightly a nerd like me then you know all about CES (Consumer Electronics Show) that took place last week. I have tons to say and am working on a few articles regarding many of the products shown as CES but at the moment they are not ready. Instead, my focus right now is of Steve Job’s MacWorld Keynote which just concluded roughly 30 minutes ago in San Francisco. While I do not own an Apple computer I can’t help but be amazed at the products they produce. The sense of style, usability, and functionality which Apple is dedicated to always makes me slightly giddy.
First up, the Mac mini. One of the main hindrances that I believe Apple has faced with their computers is solely price. No longer does software or compatibility prevent computer users to adapt to Mac’s and thankfully price is now no longer an issue. Available for $499 (1.25GHZ) and $599 (1.42GHz) the Mac mini comes equipped with a G4 processor, 40 or 80GB hard drive, a slot-loading CD-R/DVD-ROM optical drive, 256MB DDR SDRAM and ATI Radeon 9200 graphics chip with 32MB dedicated DDR SDRAM (no keyboard, mouse, or monitor included).
The only spec I have concern over is the extreme lack of graphics memory. Nevertheless, this 6″x6″x2″ (yes those are the correct dimensions) slice of Apple will surely be a hit for individuals that just want to try something different or lack the funds to fully make the switch.
Next is the iPod shuffle. I certainly understand Apple’s thought process is developing a device such as this but it amazes that consumers will be willing to spend $99 (512MB) or $149 (1GB) for a mini-mini iPod that holds roughly 120 to 240 songs respectfully. I suppose 120 songs are sufficient for air travel but personally I’d rather save up a little more and get either an iPod mini or just a regular iPod that can hold my entire collection of music. Even still, the iPod shuffle sure does look cool and is absolutely tiny at 3.3 in x .98 in x 0.33 in.
Look out for more thoughts on the new Apple products including iWork, iLife, and more once I can get a hold of the video feed from the show.
