Today Apple introduces two new members of the ipod family, the iPod Photo(pictured right) and the U2 Special Edition iPod. iPod PhotoThe iPod Photo is capable of displaying photos on it’s 220×176 pixel color display. In addition it can display 25 thumbnails at time for easy “highlighting” of favorites. Probably the most interesting this is the ability to display via an AV cable on standard 4:3 televisions and also on 16:9 televisions. Apparently the photos are optimized for display on televisions but if you have ever tried to show pictures on your tv you know the quality is horrendous, that is unless you have HDTV.

When it was rumored that Apple had a iPod that would display photos up it’s sleeve, that biggest cause of confusion was how windows users would transfer pictures to their new photo displaying iPod. Many wishfully thought iPhoto would be made available on PC much like iTunes. Apple was able to sneak around that one which was bound to cause even more Mac vs. Windows discussions by introducing iTunes 4.7. The newest version allows you to transfer photos to your iPod via the iTunes interface without the need for a program like iPhoto. Darn for windows users, we thought we had a chance…

Update: I just found out from Binary Bonsai that the new iPod Photo also displays the album art of the currently playing song. Pretty cool!
