Yzerman…

Red Wings

Today in a NHL Playoff game between the Detriot Red Wings and Calgary Flames, the Red Wings captain, Steve Yzerman, was hit with the puck after a odd deflection. On a shot by Mathieu Schneider, the puck deflected a Calgary player in front of the net directly into Yzerman’s face. I’ve been able to get a Video (windows media play required) of the horrible injury. At this point, we are not sure if the puck stuck the eye or another area of the face.

Yzerman has been my personal favorite hockey player, and sports athlete of all time. Yzerman ranks 9th All-Time in the NHL for goals scored, 8th for All-Time assists, and 6th All-Time for points. As you can see, he is one of hockey’s greatest all-time players and at age 38, I can only hope that his injury is minor and is able to return very soon.

UPDATE (Mon. 5/3) : After a total of 4 1/2 hours of surgery to repair multiple fractures to his orbital bone and a sratched cornea, Yzerman is expected to make a full recovery. While a return during this playoff year is highly unlikely, Yzerman, who turns 39 on May 6th would be fully recovered in time for next season (barring any retirement). In an inspirational gesture, Yzerman asked doctors if he could rejoin the team for their flight to Calgary for game 6 (Tonight 5/3 @ 10pm). While Yzerman will be unable to travel with the team, a win in game 6 is the only way for Detroit to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Steve Yzerman has been a fabulous hockey player for his entire career. One of the greatest testimonials to his value in Detroit is the fact that he was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings and has been a member of that team ever since. That draft took place in 1983 and 660 goals, 1010 assists, and 1670 points later, Steve Yzerman is Detroit’s Captain over 20 years later. During his illustrious career I am certain there have been opportunities for him to enter the “free market” and join another team for more money. Yet, he remains a Red Wing. Yzerman is close to retirement due to knee injuries and his age but this is not the way to end his career. It is my hope and the hope of every true lover of hockey that Steve Yzerman can overcome this set-back and play one more year at least. Our prayers are with him on a quick and complete recovery from this most recent injury. Let’s go Wings……Win this series over the Calgary Flames for your Captian.
