Food For Thought

After playing around with different aspects of my site today, I just could not help myself but to tell the world about the horrible internet browser that is Internet Explorer

Basically, it all started when I visited Andy Budd’s WebBlog. He has seemed to pull off one of the most simple, functional, and beautiful designs I have seen on the internet.Get Firefox Digging through the code of his site, I decided not to undertake another redesign (God knows I don’t need that now…) but rather to implement some of his ideas onto my site. The first, moving the date from the “Posted By” area to directly next to the entry title.

Although this seems like an easy task, it actually involves a decent amount of work. First I have to edit seven separate CSS Style Sheets to format the new class for the date “heading.” Then, I have to edit each template within MovableType to make sure the complete change to the code (that’s that part you see) is valid. And finally comes the test part. I just rebuild the site and cross my fingers, hoping that all turns out the way it was intended.

And now to the point. Everything was set up, I double and triple checked it all so that you, the visitor, would not notice any “maintenance” was being performed to the site. So everything looked good and I rebuilt the site. I look in FireFox, my primary browser, and it looks perfect! Mission successful right? Think again, suddenly I am told by one of my daily visitors that the site looks weird. I can’t think of why because it looks perfect to me. And then it hits me, I better check it in Internet Explorer. And let me just say that a pleasant suprise was waiting for me. Not only did the site have the appearence of chaos, but it would have required a magnifying glass to even read. It just proved to me that IE, although the standard web browser for most windows users, is an inferior method of truly viewing the web the way it was intended to be viewed. However, unlike most “tech” people I do not hate Microsoft and the software they produce. I think they have given the computer world invaluable software and they will continue to. I only wish that Microsoft would continue to enhance their software with the “things” that actually mean something, like displaying CSS, HTML, and other web standards the way they are meant to be displayed rather than add the ability to integrate your pictures, MP3’s, and videos into internet explorer (or something equally as useless). Until this day I speak of, I will use Firefox and other alternatives to surf the internet. That is all for now…

hey, brad, i downloaded firefox and camino and absolutely love them both better than IE. Unfortunate that 90% of the globe seems to be using IE, because even my tee site looks better on the others, and i love that i can see my tee favicon (i have a mac)…

    thanks for the heads up…

thanks for the comment Manon! I just was going to crazy with IE last night. It really behaves very inconsistently. It’s funny it will do some CSS tricks but than not others. Kinda funny if you ask me. Anyway, I know Firefox and Camino are both extremely nice. Plus Firefox for Mac has a beautiful PinStripe theme that we windows users do not get to enjoy. Also, the favicons are great also. It’s amazing how many sites actually have them but IE just doesn’t take advantage of them. Anyway…glad your still visiting the site and be on the look out for more polishing changes.
